It's a brave step to study abroad and leave your comfort zone. M.Sc. Finance graduate James Matete did exactly that and moved from Kenya to Germany for his Master’s degree, deciding to take a break from his job to study at ISM in Germany.

FAQ – Master 's degree in Finance
A Master’s in Finance is generally considered a strong and valuable degree, especially for students aiming to build careers in banking, investment management, corporate finance, or financial services. However, its value today depends more than ever on how it aligns with current labour market trends and skill demand.
In recent years, the finance job market has remained resilient, but more competitive. Entry-level roles in traditional areas such as investment banking and asset management continue to attract a large number of graduates, while employers increasingly look for candidates with stronger analytical, digital, and data-driven skills. At the same time, the finance sector is expanding into areas such as fintech, ESG investing, risk analytics, and financial data science.
Recent labour market developments also show a shift in demand rather than a decline in opportunities. Finance remains one of the core high-employment sectors globally, alongside healthcare and technology, with strong long-term hiring forecasts. However, there is a clear mismatch emerging: many graduates still concentrate on a narrow set of roles, while growth is increasingly happening in specialised and technical finance areas.
An MSc in Finance is generally considered a challenging degree because it combines quantitative analysis, financial theory, and practical business applications. Students typically study subjects such as corporate finance, investment management, financial markets, risk management, and financial modelling. Many courses require strong analytical thinking and the ability to work with financial data, mathematics, statistics, and complex business scenarios.
However, the level of difficulty depends on your academic background, interest in finance, and commitment to your studies. Students with prior knowledge in business, economics, accounting, or finance often find it easier to adapt to the programe in Finance.
The M.Sc. Finance at ISM is designed to be academically rigorous while providing strong support through small class sizes, interactive teaching methods, and close contact with professors. The curriculum combines theoretical foundations with practical applications, including case studies, projects, and real-world business challenges.
Our students are expected to attend clasess on-campus four days per week, and engage actively with topics such as corporate finance, risk management, investment strategies, and financial decision-making. While the program can be demanding and require self-study, ISM's practice-oriented approach and personalised learning environment help students develop the knowledge and skills needed for successful careers in finance. Also, our friendly study coaches are there to help students achieve
