Full-Time Distance Learning: Pros and Cons of an Online Program

Most people are familiar with distance learning as a form of continuing education pursued alongside a job—that is, part-time. Far fewer people, however, know that you can also pursue a distance learning program full-time. Enrolling at a distance learning university does not necessarily require that you be employed. This means that you can begin a full-time distance learning program right after graduating from high school.

The practical advantage: With a full-time online degree program, you remain completely flexible—you can study at your own pace, anytime and anywhere, follow your own daily routine, and prepare for your career with an academic degree. And in most cases, even a part-time job or working as a student trainee is no problem.

What are the benefits of a full-time online degree programs, and what challenges should you be prepared for? That’s exactly what we’ve taken a closer look at for you below.

What is a full-time distance learning program?

With a full-time distance learning program, you can earn your bachelor’s degree in six semesters. We recommend dedicating about 40 hours per week to your studies. However, with a full-time distance learning program, you are completely in charge of managing your own time. All administrative tasks are handled digitally.

In return, you’ll receive your own access to the E-Campus. For your full-time distance learning program, you’ll use this platform to access course materials, communicate with professors and fellow students, participate in online seminars, and even take your exams in a virtual lecture hall. You can also plan the modules of your degree program at your own pace. Important for a full-time distance learning program: comprehensive support and guidance throughout your studies. Our study coaches are here to assist you.

What are the advantages of a full-time distance learning program?

The duration of a full-time program naturally differs from that of a part-time program. Because a full-time program is shorter than a part-time program, you’ll earn your degree faster with a full-time distance learning program.

As a full-time student, you can apply for BAföG funding while pursuing a distance learning program, work part-time, or work as a student employee. You are also eligible for health insurance specifically for students while enrolled in a full-time distance learning program. With your student ID, which serves as proof of enrollment in a full-time program, you can receive student discounts and special offers at many locations.

Do you love to travel or want to study abroad? With a full-time distance learning program, that’s no problem. And what about full-time distance learning without a high school diploma? That’s also possible, provided you meet certain admission requirements.

Unlike a full-time program at a university, a full-time distance learning program has no in-person classes. This gives you significantly more flexibility when it comes to planning your life, but it also requires a high degree of self-organization, motivation, and discipline.

Our Tips for Studying While Working

When it comes to distance learning, the key is to develop a consistent routine and a well-thought-out time management plan that ensures you can keep up with your coursework, continue to perform well in your job, and still have time for family and friends. With the right balance, you’ll also ensure that you stay motivated and disciplined in both your full-time job and your studies. This includes setting up your own workspace and using effective study methods.

What challenges will I face in a full-time distance learning program?

A full-time distance learning program requires you to organize and structure your entire study routine independently. This calls for responsibility, self-discipline, and effective time management. Since there is no set schedule provided by the university—as there is with in-person classes—you must motivate yourself every day. Additionally, you are responsible for finding a conducive study space for your full-time distance learning program.

Also, be aware that with a full-time distance learning program, you don’t see your fellow students every day, as you would at a traditional university. This can quickly become a burden if you’re studying entirely on your own at home. We know that regular interaction is important even in a full-time distance learning program. That’s why one of our main focuses is on organizing networking opportunities.

Through the ISM E-Campus, you can connect directly with your fellow students and reach out to your tutors. In addition, we’re always here to support you personally throughout your full-time distance learning program and ensure comprehensive support.

Tuition fees can be another challenge when pursuing a full-time distance learning program. A fixed amount is due every month. However, since you are not working a full-time job, this can be a hurdle in full-time distance learning.

If you start studying right after graduation, you’ll usually still receive child benefit. Another option for full-time distance learning is to apply for BAföG if you qualify for it. A loan might also be a good option. You can find out about other financing options on our dedicated page.

In most cases, holding down a part-time job or working as a student trainee alongside full-time distance learning is no problem. This way, you can always earn some extra money to cover your living expenses and don’t have to and you won’t have to limit your free time. We’d be happy to advise you in person on financing a full-time distance learning program.

Tip:

  • If you have the time but are still unsure whether a full-time distance learning program is right for you, you can change your study schedule once a year upon request.

When is a part-time program the better choice?

In short: If you work full-time, can’t dedicate more than 40 hours a week to a full-time distance learning program, or if the workload would be too heavy for you, you should opt for a part-time program.
