Marcus Ruckh during his semester abroad at an university in Honolulu, Hawaii

My semester abroad in Hawaii

The people and the culture were among the most important aspects that attracted me to the Hawaii islands. The multiple group activities and projects made it easy to make friends there. Almost everyone is nice and helpful. Those who live on the island have a laid-back mentality, which has now become established there. The stereotypical laid-back lifestyle has proven to be true and you should get involved with it.

ISM psychology student Carmen Fischer
Successful in her job and research

#Springboard to your career

Publishing your own article in a high-ranking research journal? Checked! Carmen Fischer studied M.Sc. Psychology & Management at ISM and wrote her thesis on the influence of motivational factors on the creativity and innovation of skilled workers. But that was just the beginning: together with two ISM professors, she published an article about her study.

Her employer is one of the Big Four management consultancies. Carmen was already able to gain experience there as a working student during her studies. After completing her Master's in Psychology degree, she joined the company directly as a consultant. Writing her article alongside her job was a challenge. After all, the process from initial discussions to publication took around a year.

The combination of business studies and psychology is incredibly helpful in my job, as I can look at HR from both sides. Topics such as motivation, management culture, working conditions and psychological procedures were important subjects during my studies, which I now encounter on a daily basis in my job. ISM is also very practice-oriented. Many professors come from the business world, so I gained first-hand knowledge that I can put into practice today.

  • Which is better M.A Psychology or M.Sc. Psychology?

Whether a Master of Science (M.Sc.) or a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Psychology is “better” depends on your future goals and the program’s content. A M.Sc. in Psychology is usually more scientific, analytical, and research-oriented than a M.A. in Psychology and is best suited for roles that require stronger empirical skills. A M.A. is more applied, theoretical, and broad in scope and is best for students aiming for practitioner roles, like, organizational development, HR and counseling. At ISM, the program combines the best of the two worlds as our M.Sc. Psychology program includes lots of applied business elements.
