Practical project “BVB Bewegt”

ISM students advise Borussia Dortmund on the strategic development of the sustainability initiative “BVB bewegt” to promote children and young people from Dortmund

Dortmund, 11.07.2024

Children and young people in Germany do not get enough exercise. According to figures from the Federal Center for Health Education from 2023, a full 60 percent of children and young people do not get the recommended 60 minutes of exercise per day. This makes it all the more important that sports clubs use their influence and resources to change the situation - this is the idea of sports management students Hannah Strate, Luca Prause, Laura Breitwieser, Julius Funke and Julia Schatzmann. In their practical project with Borussia Dortmund under the direction of Prof. Dr. Timo Zimmermann, they are advising the Champions League finalist on the further development of the “BVB Bewegt” sustainability initiative to get children and young people in Dortmund moving more and develop their personalities in a playful way.

No initiative without a well thought-out concept

When it comes to strategic development, a clear vision and the goals derived from it are important. The vision of “BVB bewegt” is to promote sustainability through sport in the everyday lives of children and young people. This can have an impact on the areas of health, community and personal development. In the long term, the aim is to get all children and young people in the city of Dortmund moving and thus contribute to the health and well-being of society.

What does this mean in concrete terms?  In addition to the existing cooperation with daycare centers and schools, increased cooperation with partners, sponsors and supporters would be helpful to further advance the project. Accordingly, the recruitment and retention of partners and employees was a key point for the students. They also discussed the development of the “BVB moves” brand and the associated communication of the measures. “It is essential that young and older children, their parents and BVB's existing partners are aware of and understand the “BVB bewegt” initiative,” emphasized Hannah Strate.

Formal considerations such as embedding the initiative in the structures of the BVB, i.e. defining an organizational structure, must also be taken into account. The students developed various scenarios for organizational development and presented recommendations. Credo: The prerequisite for successful change is the involvement of all relevant stakeholders and agreement on a common vision.

“BVB bewegt“ is a great sustainability initiative in the sporting and social fields and is based precisely on BVB's core competencies and historical roots,” summarizes Prof. Dr. Timo Zimmermann. “It is a sensible response to the lack of exercise in today's society and has an impact on the city and region. We are proud to continue to support BVB on this path.”
