Examinations Committee

The Examinations Committee is a central examination body of the ISM. It makes sure that students are following the exam rules and that exams are being conducted properly. The Committee also decides who will be the examiner or co-examiner, and when an exam is cancelled. It is also responsible for handling and ruling on appeals against decisions made during the examination process.

Sustainability at ISM

Sustainability at ISM

For us, sustainable development means the balanced, long-term, integrative and holistic consideration of ecological, social and economic concerns with special reference to space and technology. Sustainable development is understood as a continuous, voluntary, transparent and credible process. Measures do not necessarily link all sub-areas at all times, but can also focus on individual sub-elements which give in sum a view on the holistic development. In this sense, we as a university, focus on the main areas Governance, University Operations, Teaching, Research as well as Initiatives, Engagement and Transfer.

In our sustainability report, which is based on the PRME principles, you can read about all of ISM's activities and commitments in the area of sustainability:

Institutional Setup and Cooperations

Sustainability Team

The Sustainability Team is the central cross-campus institution for coordinating and implementing sustainability issues in university operations. A spokesperson is appointed from the team who represents the team, acts as a central contact for technical issues, initiates projects, convenes meetings and expands the network. • Institute for Sustainable Transformation

The Research Institute for Sustainable Transformation at ISM focuses on sustainable corporate management topics, including the assessment of environmental and social sustainability performance and the management of stakeholder relationships.

The main objective of the institute is to specifically enable medium-sized companies to successfully meet the new legal ESG standards and to effectively manage the opportunities and risks of the sustainable transformation process.

  • PRME

ISM is a member of PRME (Principles for Responsible Management Education), an initiative of the UN Global Compact, the United Nations corporate network for sustainable and responsible management.

PRME supports (higher) education institutions around the world in raising their sustainability profile. ISM's sustainability report builds on the six principles PRME issues to align business and sustainability goals.

Research Activities

Research Activities

Research at ISM focuses on various areas of expertise. The institutes carry out cross-location research projects and expand and establish networks in scientific practice. The departments, to which all university lecturers are assigned according to their thematic expertise, pool specialist knowledge in the management areas in which ISM is active and represent an important interface between research and teaching. Here, the goal of acquiring third-party funding is to involve the professorial staff in transforming research expertise into ISM's degree programs and doctoral programs. These doctoral programs, in cooperation with international partner universities, enable university lecturers to carry out practical projects together with young researchers. In addition, ISM is active in completed and ongoing research projects and various application procedures in research networks such as the Master Plan Science of the City of Dortmund, the Cologne Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and the Entrepreneurs Club Cologne (ECC).

One of our key areas of expertise is entrepreneurship. The Entrepreneurship Institute@ISM carried out the “Entrepreneurship as a Service” (EaaS@ISM) project from 2021 to 2024 as part of the “EXIST-Potentiale” funding program. This four-year project established a noticeable and stimulating start-up culture at ISM and created suitable conditions for the emergence of innovative start-ups from the university.

In January 2025, the Dortmund Economic Development Agency, the Dortmund Chamber of Industry and Commerce, TU Dortmund University, Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, and ISM founded innoclub. innoclub is an exclusive network designed to strengthen innovation in Dortmund and the Westphalian Ruhr region. Here, medium-sized companies and corporations meet a curated selection of excellent start-ups to inspire each other and share experiences, knowledge, skills, and resources. To this end, corporate members on the one hand and start-up members on the other are accepted into the club. All important details about innoclub and the numerous events can be found here: https://innoclub.net/

Focus of research

In line with its focus on teaching and study, ISM's research and development projects concentrate on different areas of emphasis and transdisciplinary approaches. The focus is on the following research areas, among others:

  • Digitalization and communication
  • Marketing and communications research
  • Sustainability and transformation
  • Resource economy
  • Industrial and organizational psychology
  • Tourism
  • Mobility and transport
  • Financial and banking research

The published ISM research reports show this variety of topics in detail:

Research cooperation

ISM is involved in various research networks, such as the City of Dortmund's Science Master Plan and various ongoing activities and projects in the field of entrepreneurship. Through these activities, ISM has been able to attract universities, institutes, and consulting firms as cooperation partners for further project proposals. Third-party funded research focuses on highly topical research areas, particularly in the fields of digitalization and sustainability.

In addition, ISM's institutes and departments are involved in specialist networks. ISM offers doctoral opportunities in cooperation with international university partners. These partners include Strathclyde Business School (SBS) and Edinburgh Napier University (ENU) in Scotland, Bond Business School (BBS) in Australia, Westcliff University in Irvine, USA, and Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, India. Through these cooperative doctoral programs and other individual cooperations, joint research topics can be defined and addressed at an international level. This enables ISM to further intensify its international cooperation and also meet the demand for practice-oriented doctoral opportunities.

Publications

With its publication series, the ISM offers modern and high-quality opportunities to make the diverse research results of a practice-oriented university accessible to students, practitioners and the scientific community. The series are available both in print and, in some cases, as free downloads on the Internet. The following series are offered:
