Northumbria UniversityNewcastle Business School, based in Newcastle Upon Tyne and with a strong international focus, is one of four faculties within Northumbria University. There are a total of 5,500 students enrolled.
Newcastle Business School has an excellent reputation for business management education and is currently undergoing the AACSB accreditation process. Research focuses primarily on interdisciplinary themes with a strong emphasis on practical application. Postgraduate research covers the following subject areas: Accounting and Financial Management, Business Analysis Systems and Supply Chain Management, Marketing Travel and Tourism Management, Organisation and Human Resource Management, Strategic Management and International Business.

Cooperation

Northumbria UniversityISM and Northumbria University have developed a cooperation which allows ISM graduates and other graduates to apply for a PhD or a DBA program in the Faculty of Business and Law. Both degrees are at this point in time officially accepted doctoral degrees in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

A preselection for the program is made by ISM, final admission will depend on Northumbria University. The supervision will be done jointly by Northumbria University (1st supervisor) and ISM (2nd supervisor). A maximum of 3 candidates per year is agreed.

Delivery of the programs shall take place according to Northumbria University’s Regulations & Code of Practice for Postgraduate Research Programmes.

Administrative support for ISM candidates will be provided by ISM.

PhD Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is an original research to doctoral level in the chosen field of study with a standard duration of three years full-time and five years part-time.

Candidates need an upper second class honours degree (UK) or equivalent, or a Masters degree in a relevant discipline.

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum GPA: 2.0 (German grading system)
  • Proof of English language proficiency: IELTS 7.0 (with no subscore lower than 6.5) or TOEFL ibt 100
  • A research proposal at an appropriate level for doctoral study which can be supervised by both Newcastle Business School and ISM research staff
  • Upper second class honours degree (UK) or equivalent, or a Masters degree in a relevant discipline

DBA Doctor of Business Administration

The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) has a clear focus on developing and improving professional practice with a standard duration of two years full-time and three years part-time.

Masters qualification in a Business and Management related area (or exceptionally an equivalent qualification with substantial work experience in a business and management discipline) which includes a substantive study of the field, personal and professional development and research training resulting in a research dissertation. The research training and research element must equate to a minimum of 60 credits (30 ECTS) A minimum of 3 years’ experience of business and management practice in line with the University Professional Doctorate Framework and/or evidence of appropriate continuous professional development.

Admission Requirements

  • Research Proposal: Proposed area of research, types of research methods to be used, relations to any previous research done in this field (~1000 words)
  • Academic transcripts
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Proof of relevant managerial experience (DBA only)
  • Application Form (issued by ISM after consulting session)
  • Curriculum Vitae

Your application will firstly be reviewed by ISM. It will then be passed to Northumbria University for consideration. If your application is deemed to be of merit, a telephone interview with a potential principal supervisor and the Research Director will be arranged. Thereafter the official application to the Northumbria University will be completed.

Deadlines:

  • Program Start in October: Contact the ISM supervisor by the 31. March of the same year. The final date for submission of your application is the 31. May.
  • Program Start in January: Contact the ISM supervisor by the 15. July of the previous year. The final date for submission of your application is the 30. September.
